Opening MTJY has brought me in touch with all types of people at all levels and stages of their yoga practice. The one thing I hear most often is “I’m not flexible enough to do yoga” or “I’ll never be able to do that pose”. At first I was surprised and beyond the standard “if you practice enough it will come” I really didn’t have a good response. When I found yoga – or when it found me, depending on your perspective – it was like coming home. I had found a place in myself where I was completely comfortable. The poses came naturally to me and the breath and meditation aspects were eye opening and amazing. All of which is why I couldn’t identify with these common sentiments. Living your truth was the topic of discussion at a class I recently attended with Seane Corn. For those who don’t know of Seane, she is a global brand. A Yogini who has taken her teaching and charitable work global and started a charity called Off the Mat, Into the World. The concept of living your truth is one that has become very important to me and is hugely important in how I live my life, how I get from day to day. It isn’t, however, something that I had ever considered in relation to the physical aspects of yoga. Having had some time to think about it now I realise that the truth is that while I know that yoga is for everyone and that by practicing yoga we will make the world a better place many of my students come to yoga for a work out and get discouraged when they can’t make their poses look the way they think they should. For me practicing my truth means that I can find many poses in my body. It seems I was built to back bend and forward fold. It also means that I have super tight hips and quads and that “simple” poses like pigeon are agony for me. What I know now, what I wish I knew when my very first student told me that they weren’t flexible enough to do yoga, is that to practice your truth means accepting what your body can and can’t do. Some days the truth of my forward fold is that I can’t touch my toes, the truth of my downward dog is that my arms hurt, and the truth of Sivasana is that I can’t quiet my mind. Practicing my truth means opening my heart to these things and instead of getting frustrated or aggravated accepting them as my yoga. It is true that with practice, poses will improve as our bodies strengthen and become more flexible. It is also true that we aren’t all built to wrap our legs around our heads and that some poses just aren’t for some people. What I do know for sure is that yoga is for everyone whatever the truth of your physical postures may be. More Than Just Yoga is dedicated to teaching you how to find your truth through the practice of Yoga and ultimately here to help us heal individually which in turn will heal the World and make it a better place! |
